STORY LINE

GV Prakash is one lucky chap as he shares his birthday with two girls, born in the same area. They all celebrate their birthday together and grow up in each other's company. Eventually, GV Prakash falls in love with one of the girls, played by Anandhi.

But thanks to GV Prakash's lecherous nature and his inability to keep his secrets within himself, Anandhi breaks up with him. Following the break up, his attention turns toward the other girl, played by Manisha Yadav, who is exactly opposite to his first girlfriend. As it turns out, GV Prakash finds her modernity too hot to handle, which leads to their break up.

Whom the film's protagonist finally ends up with forms the rest of the story which has been narrated with loads of adult comedy that might leave you covering your face, should you decide to watch this entertainer with your family. VTV Ganesh comedy is the added value to the flim.

Maya - Tamil Horror Movie Review and Pictures

Maya is a Tamil Horror movie direction by debut director Ashwin Saravanan. The movie has Nayantara and Aari in a lead role. The movie title has been changed from 'Night Show' to 'Maya'.

STORY LINE Aari works for a print media and is assigned a horror series. While working on it, one particular episode involving an old mental institution inside the forest of Mayavanam fascinates him and his friend, played by Amzath Khan. Since the episode they are working on is based on a book which claims that the story of a certain Maya Matthews is true, Aari and his friend dwell deep into the story, hoping that the subject they are handling is nothing more than a mere fiction. On the other hand, Nayantara's life is narrated. She is an actress and a single mother with serious financial crunch. How is her life connected with the character named Maya Matthews forms the crux of this fascinating story. The sync between each character is a credit. At the begining the movie seams to be slow but the finishing touch was perfect. Really has the traces of watching the english movie.

South India Actor Surya in Aadhavan Movie - Review

If laughter is the best medicine along with mass masala items, then veteran director KS Ravikumar has earned his stripes again with Aadhavan. Add Suriya, who looks sensational in a role that has negative shades and lots of comedy. The actor manages to pump some clean fun and make it the ideal family entertainer for Diwali.

The wafer-thin storyline depends more on Suriya’s star power to cruise through two hours and 45 minutes. Aadhavan (Suriya) is a hired assassin who works in tandem with Ibrahim Rowther (Sayaji Shinde) and his son (Anand Babu) in Kolkata. Justice Subramaniyam (late Malayalam actor Murali), is about to give his final judgment in an organ trade case where hundreds of children died due to the greed of a doctor, Abdul Kulkarni (Rahul Dev).

Kulkarni approaches Rowther with a contract to kill the judge and Aadhavan starts his next mission. But for the first time in his life, the ace assassin misses his mark and Aadhavan, through the help of Bannerji (Vadivel), comes into close contact with the Judge’s large family consisting of his mother (Saroja Devi), niece Tara (Nayanthara) and others. Soon Aadhavan finds out certain dark secrets and also develops a soft corner for Tara. Finally, the hunter turns hunted as the film hurtles towards the climax.

Only problem with Ramesh Kanna’s story is that it does not have a single original bone in its body, and is inspired from various movies. The film moves at a leisurely pace in the first half (92 minutes), depending mainly on Suriya and Vadivel's bickering. The story does not move forward. The second half is racy (73 minutes), despite a predictable climax. The Kollywood mass hero turns into a one-man fighting machine and saves his loved ones after doing the impossible.

The music of Harris Jayaraj is hummable, though the placement of songs just does not gel with the narration, with Hasili Fisili and Yaeno Yaeno in the second half, which looks alike.

The action scenes of Kanal Kannan and Franz Spilhaus are sensational, especially the hit and run chase picturised in Kolkata in the first half. Also, Ganesh’s camerawork has sheen. The special effects job where Suriya is transformed into a 10-year-old look realistic.

It is an out and out Suriya show. The film rides on the magic of the actor, and his zany shenanigans alone makes it worth a watch. Nayanthara looks beautiful and classy, and for a change, her glamour image has not been exploited. She comes across as the girl-next-door.

Murali, in his last film, puts up a convincing performance while Saroja Devi as the Paati is okay with her trademark, excessive make-up. Vadivel is a scream and is present throughout the film.

Ranging through a wide field of comedy laced with action, Aadhavan is good fun while it lasts. It’s a roller-coaster ride of pure unadulterated masala.

Kollywood Actor Jayam Ravi's Movie Peranmai - Review

Ayngaran International can take pride that they have produced Peranmai, a different type of entertainer with a subtle message. It is a film within the commercial format, but does not pander to mass masala, which itself is a welcome change.

SP Jananathan is a gutsy and daring director to make a pro-reservation film, which shows the upper caste tilts in our administration. Here is a definitive movie with a moral framework, and commitment along with a stunning and realistic climax.

In an interview, Jananathan has said that “Peranmai means a man who has complete control over his body and soul, which means he has the best of manly qualities”. His hero Dhruvan (Jayam Ravi) is a tribal and forest guard who works for the welfare of his tribe and spreading education among them. Ganapathiram (Ponvannan) is his boss and a forest ranger who at every opportune moment insults and ridicules him for being a low caste.

One day Dhruvan is put in charge of five arrogant girls (Dhansika, Maha, Liasri, Saranya and Vasundhara) all NCC cadets, who are on a trekking mission. The girls are initially reluctant to work under Dhruvan, more out of his being born into a lower caste and humiliate him. However inside the forest they find out that he is a very efficient and smart guy who knows his way about.

Meanwhile they stumble on a group of foreign mercenaries led by Anderson (Roland Kickenger) who are planning to stop India’s scientific progress by destroying a rocket launch by using missiles.

The rocket launch is to take place from Valiamalai inside the forest area. Dhruvan and the five girls using tact, guts and courage try to stop the 16 well armed foreigners from launching the missile. As duty calls, can Dhruvan and his five women army who now bond together succeed to save our space system?

The first half of the film is slow moving and tedious as it takes place at a NCC training camp, where the director is trying to establish his hero’s character as a restrained, calm and composed guy who does not get rattled when he is treated almost with contempt by the girls and his senior officer.

The way the girls tease him after a time becomes irritating. The censors have muted a lot of anti reservation dialogues in the film, and there are also some double entendres.

However the fast-paced second half and stunning climax is the highlight of the film. Jayam Ravi is brilliant as Dhruvan. Calm and composed, he makes the transition from the lover boy to an action hero with ease. For the first time, Ravi does not sing a song nor does he romance.

All the five girls in the film look natural and promising. Vadivel is there to lighten the proceedings and Oorvasi as teacher is ok. Ponvannan is perfect as the officer, who walks away with all the glory of the other person’s hard work and dedication. Roland Kikenger has hardly anything to do other than look menacing.

Vidyasagar’s music is a snore though his background score is appealing. A major plus are the locations inside the forest and the action scenes of Miracle Michael. The fist to fist combat and the methods used by our hero to kill the opponents are taken in a very stylish and realistic manner with deft camera movements of Satish Kumar. The art director Selva Kumar’s armoury of guns and missiles which he has created for the film looks real.

Though the film may not have mass appeal to work in B & C it will definitely attract the city audiences for its smashingly original climax. It is a brave film that is trying to change the placid world of Tamil cinema.

Chiyaan Vikram and Shriya in kollywood film Kandasamy moive review

Chiyaan Vikram has a winner in Kandasamy. It is pure commercial masala entertainer that strikes a fine balance between style and substance, and also has a neat message. Susi Ganeshan has constructed an engrossing action driven adventure with panache.

The film has all the trademark superhero-movie elements like flashy action scenes and eye-popping special effects. But in many ways, it is not the typical super-hero film that one imagines it to be. Well, that’s the twist in the tale which we will not reveal as it will be a spoiler.

Kandasamy opens with scenes showing ordinary people flocking to a Murugan temple which has become famous as all your wishes can be fulfilled at the temple. All those who submit their woes as petitions to Kandasamy (another name for Lord Muruga) on a piece of paper and tie it to a tree in the temple, their problems mainly financial are solved.

Soon Kandasamy (Vikram) becomes a phenomenon, a caped crusader dressed as a rooster, takes up letters of ordinary folks from the petition tree, and in a Robin Hood way provides cash and succor. The local DIG of Police (Prabhu) suspects that there is something unnatural about it and starts investigating.

Meanwhile there is this brave and daring CBI officer Kandasamy (Vikram), who is on a mission to uncover black money and illegal wealth of rich and corrupt Indians stashed in foreign banks, which he believes is responsible for all the crime in our society. And our hero has the IQ of a genius, the strength of a bull and the speed of a cheetah.

Soon he crosses swords with Pallur Paramajyoti Ponnusamy or PPP (Ashish Vidyarti), the man with a golden tooth and conducts a raid in his palatial bungalow and finds unaccounted cash and documents of various foreign deals worth over Rs 1000 crore! PPP is devastated after the raid and his only daughter Subbalakshmi (Shriya Saran) swears revenge and pretends to fall in love with the dashing IPS officer.

What is the connection between masked crusader Kandasamy and the CBI officer Kandasamy? Why is the CBI Joint Director Krishna Rao (Telugu actor Krishna) protecting Mr. Kandasamy? Can the villains- PPP, Rajmohan of RMG group, and Mexican Pitchumani (Alex) expose and bring Kandasamy to trial? Will the DIG succeed in proving that Kandasamy is no God? The underlining message in the film is, “Money (read black) is the root cause of all evil”.

Don’t ask the answers to all these questions, the idea is to have a chill out time. Watch the action which is fast paced even though slightly long ( 3 hours 12 minutes), chew on your popcorn as the adrenaline goes pumping. The rooster Kandasamy introduction scene where he comes crashing through the dome of a police station, and plays around with the bad comic cop (Mansoor Ali Khan) is terrific.

But the highlight is Kandasamy dressed as a woman, a la Aishwarya Rai and teaching Charly and Mayilsamy a fitting lesson is hilarious. The verbal foreplay between the quarrelsome Kandasamy and Subbalakshmi is quite ticklish, and Kandasamy’s blindfolded action scenes in Mexico are stunning.

Technically the film is chic with slick production values. The innovative camera angles and lighting of cinematographer NK Ekambaram makes the film visually stunning. He has given a different colour tone to the Mexico episode of the film. Thotta Tharini’s set designs are fabulous, the luxury bedroom of the heroine and the interior of the plush bus used as villain’s hide out is fantastic. The VFX work of Movinstilz makes it picture perfect, the night effect scenes especially the fight scene in the corn field.

Music of Devi Sri Prasad blends with the mood of the film. Two of the six songs, Excuse me Mr.Kandasamy… and Yen Peru Meenakumari have been well picturised and lavishly shot. There is grandeur and richness in every shot in the film, no wonder it took two years to complete. Susy Ganeshan who does a cameo in the film joins the big league of directors in Tamil for directing an adventurous film with an underlying message.

But the film indubitably belongs to Vikram and he rocks. He is mesmerizing and has given an extra dimension to the characters he plays in the film and steers it to the winning post. There are very few people in Indian cinema who can do the larger-than-life fantasy character as easily as Vikram.

Shriya sizzles throughout and carries the glamorous role with élan and the attitude. Prabhu fits the role of an investigative cop, while the villains are a bit clichéd. Some of the film's most enjoyable moments are Vadivel‘s comedy track as Thengakadai Thenappan. The scene where Prabhu takes him to the police station for questioning and uses water cannon is a scream!

In short, Kandasamy is a roller coaster ride of pure unadulterated masala. So go ahead, make your matinee.

Aravindhan and Charmi in Kollywood Movie Laadam - Review

Prabhu Solomon has been one such filmmaker who's so concerned for making exceptional flicks. Of course, though you've him brimming with cliched plotlines, the making style is so stunning and that's evident with his 'Kokki' and 'Lee'. So, how does he deal with Laadam?? The same efforts has been spelled by the filmmaker. Prabhu Solomon brims with an extraordinary plotline of a bold attempt, one can say. But that's unconvincing in the latter half as the screenplay struggles with more predictable parts.

The film is all about a youngster who is entangled into serious consequences that leads him accidentally into the clutches of deadly gangsters. Indeed, he has now to save himself from their clutches that he isn't involved with them in any way. That's what we call fate?

So, on the whole it's a modernized version of games 'Hide and Seek' – 'Tom and Jerry' and whatever you would like label it.

Aravindan comes to Chennai seeking for a job. Accidentally, he is held as a hit-man by a gangster (Kota Srinivasa Rao) to bump of his deadliest enemy who killed his son. Would a software engineer able to accomplish this task? Never, he in turn is shattered to death and buried. The captured video clipping of this incident is sent to Kota Srinivasa Rao himself and Charmi on the parallel tracks strides with her own intentions. What's the connection between these characters? Is there something mysterious behind Aravindan's death and what does Charmi got to do with it? With so many questions, get to watch the film that middles in the latter half.

The film is perfect in terms of narration and plot in the first half. Of course, during the intermission part, you feel so excited about what's gonna happen next.

But it's completely deteriorating everyone's expectation in the second half with a clichéd screenplay. Aravindan doesn't attempt anything new and that's not a good start for him. Charmi tries out something different, but the director depicting in a dissimilar characterization is eventually more ridiculous. Kota Srinivasa Ro is extraordinary in terms of performance.

Musical score by Dharan is average and songs aren't really captivating.

On the whole, it's a good approach by Prabhu Solomon that would've been nicer if he furthermore focused on scripting offering more twists and turns.

Kollywood Film Siva Manasula Sakthi Review

Vikatan Talkies debut film Siva Manasula Sakthi which had a lot of pre-release hype is a bit of a letdown. If originality and a solid screenplay isn't your top priority and you want a bit of candy floss some sentiments laced with lots of comedy, then you might dig this one.

Shiva(Jeeva) meets Sakthi(Anuya) meets during a train journey from Coimbatore and Chennai. Both boast a bit about their profession, Shiva says he is an army officer while Sakthi claims she is working for Thai airlines.

Soon the truth is revealed Sakthi is a high profile Radio Jockey with Hello FM, while Shiva is a lowly paid courier boy! Shiva has chip on his shoulder as he is 12th failed and a "local" who boozes in TASMAC bars with his friend Vivek (Santhanam)!

Shiva lives near Mambalam Railway station with his very humorous and funny mom (Urvasi) and a sister and is the bread winner for the family. The trouble with him is that he is a prankster who loves to play practical joke on others.

At the same time Sakthi is well educated and is an independent rich girl who has an attitude problem. They are as different as chalk and cheese, but there is some kind of spark develops between them.

The snafu is that her father has found a handsome IT guy Arun (Arya in a cameo), but Shiva pulls all stops as Sakthi slowly realizes that she is in love with him and they spent a night together! But do they live happily ever after?

There is very little in this movie that has not been lifted from countless other films notably SRK's Chalte Chalte and Hrithik's Mujhse Shaadi Karoge. It's the script that is silly, blame iton the dialogue and situation The film is basically a comedy in the first half that peters out into a sob story in the second before becoming a laugh riot in the climax!

Yuvan's music is peppy, but picturisation is tacky, there are four songs before interval that comes one after the other and two songs post break. There is no chemistry between the lead pair and the most polite comment that can be made about Anuya is she is camera friendly and has only one single expression throughout. jeeva is a joy to watch but has a tendency to go over the top.


However at the end if you come away smiling it's only because of the shenanigans of Urvasi, Santhanam, Sathyan and jeeva. The comedy track when Santhanam has to pawn his new mobile in the bar is a scream.

The film moves at a snail pace especially in the second half. If you have nothing else to do you can take a look at SMS, another time pass run-of-the-mill film.

Verdict- Average.

Kollywood Film Vennila Kabadi Kuzhu - Review

Quite sometimes, few flicks keep our expectations surmounting and of course ‘Vennila Kabadi Kuzhu’ isn’t an elision. But again, there’s a question rising to our minds why always certain filmmakers dealing with offbeat themes land up with a sad ending, probably of tragedy. ‘Poo’, ‘Subramaniapuram’ have been the best illustrations of these different sorts. Both are at farthest extremes not getting audiences adhered to the tale.

Debutant Susindhran much prior to film’s release had a statement that it is based on his dad’s life who lead a team ‘Vennila Kabadi Kuzhu’. It has a series of sequences that keeps us with trite approach. At some extents, it makes you laugh while emotional on certain portions. But a flimsy tale doesn’t pick anyone’s interest.

Wanna hear what audiences say after the show? ‘We wasted our money buying tickets’…

Take our word; films carrying the theme of ‘Sports’ has always a great welcome. Be it ‘Lagaan’, ‘Chak De India’, ‘Chennai 600028′, each and everyone topped the charts at box office. But then, ‘Vennila Kabadi Kuzhu’ hasn’t got lots of game on Kabadi. For your kind attention, you get to see those portions for 30mins. Rest of it is something clichéd where most of the portions aren’t gripping.

A small town guys name their team as ‘Vennila Kabadi Kuzhu’ and for a pathetic part, they haven’t won a single match… ‘Losers’ is what the entire village calls them. Protagonist Maari (Vishnu) isn’t a savior for this team (Not being a hero is a great surprise). There happens to be a village festival where Maari goes mesmerized by beautiful girl (Saranya Mohan) (he doesn’t get to know her name all throughout the film). Both fall in love expressing it through their eyes and few words. With their souls mingled, they have no intentions about departing from each other. She promises to meet him next year for the same festive occasion and our hero is almost like a Half-Devdas. Then it’s time for a District Level Kabadi Competition where they are losers again. But then, with a coach (Kishore) entering into their team, everything changes. Don’t assume, it’s a film about ‘Vennila Team’ winning the match and hero joining hands our heroine.

Don’t expect more from us anymore…. Watch the rest only to get disappointed.

Debutants getting on with a different theme is something off-the-wall. Vishnu being a former cricketer should’ve has helped him to emote well on the scenes involving sportsmanship. He’s good on all quotients and Saranya Mohan brims with a matured performance from previous films. Her smiles carry off the hearts of young guys. Of course, you happen to listen for more claps when she appears on the screens. Kishore is mind-boggling on his part and he can look ahead for more big offers. Hope! He doesn’t play baddie roles like in ‘Jayam Kondan’.

Laxman Kumar from the school of Rajiv Menon hasn’t embellished anything special on the screens. He has focused more on grading each frame that gives artificial look of colorization. Musical score by Selvaganesh is brilliant on both songs and background score. Many sequences sans background score especially during the game duration is something new and innovative.

Susindhran comes up with a good script in hand. The film is really entertaining throughout, but why such an appalling climax? It looks odd as if purposely done to create an impact on audiences.

As a whole, Vennila Kabadi Kuzhu is something moderately good. But the climax has it all spoiling everyone’s moods when they’re out from show.

Villu Vijay and Padikathavan Dhanush found in Theatre with fans

Vijay is aggressively marketing his Villu to its target audiences in Coimbatore, Tirupur and Erode in western Tamilnadu. He went to Adlabs Ragam complex in Coimbatore where he watched the film with his fans and responded to their queries.

Vijay told his fans: “ Villu has taken the best 10-day opening in my entire film career. I had visited Coimbatore because the movie was doing extremely well here”.

When the fans pointed out the negative campaign unleashed by vested interests, the actor said it was all a part of the game. Vijay then proceeded to head to Trichy and Madurai and parts of south Tamilnadu to popularize the film.

Meanwhile, Dhanush's whose Padikathavan is also a super hit, went on a promotional tour to Trichy and Madurai. He has also been visiting the theatres in the area and meeting his fans and interacting with them.

Victory of Kollywood Film Subramaniapuram - Movie Review

Debutant director Sasikumar who has graduated from Bala and Ameer school of film making has come out with the stark realistic Subramaniapuram. It is a gritty and grim look at four youths growing up in Madurai who due to unemployment is forced by circumstances to turn into killers.

The film is set in Madurai of the 80’s, and made like a Quentin Tarantino style revenge-and-redemption saga. The background is the bonding between four unemployed poor youths- Azhagar (Jai), Paramar (director Sasikumar), Kasi (Kanja Karuppu) and a handicapped boy living in Subramaniapuram area. They do the odd jobs and strike a rapport with the ex-councilor’ Somu’s brother (Samudrakani), a wheeler –dealer. Azhagar, the romantist falls in love with the Somu’s daughter Thulasi (Swathy).

The Azgar- Thulasi romance creates a fissure in the gang. Meanwhile the councilor’s brother uses them to murder a party rival, promising they will be bailed out. Azhagar to probably impress the family, takes the lead in committing the murder. But nobody comes to bail them out, and the guys realize that they have been used by the political family. Now the gang from sheer admiration for the family turns into a revenge spree, which leads to a gory end.

Granted that there is not much of a story here but it is the slick way the film unfolds that keeps you riveted to your seats. Sasikumar has paid more attention to slick execution, innovative camera movements including top angle and tight close-up. The art director and costume designer has worked hard to give that feel and look of the Madurai of the 80’s.

The buildings, streets, posters, Central theatre screening Rajinikanth’s super hit, old black and white TV’s showing the only channel Doordarshan’s Oliyum Oliyum Ilayaraja music in the background, guys wearing bell bottoms or colourful Shangu mark Lungies and girls still in ‘Dhavani-Pavada’!

The music director James Vasanth also deserves a pat on his back for coming out with some retro music. His use of vocal and rhythms has resulted in some sweet melodies, and his background score heightens the tense atmosphere in the film. At times Vasanth has used just silence to convey the feelings of the characters.


However the film moves at a lethargic speed, too many friendship establishing scenes are forced into the narration. Another draw back is that the film is too bloody and gory. The scene in an auto where the villain’s head is slowly chopped off, like a butcher cutting the head of a goat has also a sound track of an aruvaal cutting the throat!

The actors mostly newcomers are ok, Jai as the romantic killer is the pick of the lot. The handicapped guy, hero’s mother, ex-councilor, temple festival contractor, and Samudrakani as the villain are not only realistic looking but also have made their characters work. Director Sasikumar as Paramar is a bit wooden, while Swathy is refreshing.

Sasikumar should be appreciated for making a bold and daring film, whose success will auger well for the industry. Subramaniapuram may be a bit brooding and dark, but still it’s worth taking a look.

Verdict: Above Average

Kollywood star vijaykanth's Arasangam Movie - Review

Captain is back - saving India and its citizens from the vicious terrorists. Arasangam, however, tries to portray this nothing-so-new story by downplaying the usual supplements of a Vijayakanth movie, thereby proving to be watchable. Besides, it employs stylish camera angles and breathtaking sets and locations, setting itself a world apart from the other Vijayakanth movies.

The story, however, falls into the standard ‘Captain rescues India from the terrorist masterminds and master plans’ genre. Vijayakanth is an IPS officer with a specialization in criminology. When India’s top brains are serial-killed and officer Biju Menon, brought in to investigate the matter, is also found dead during his flight, Vijayakanth becomes the unanimous choice to nail the terrorists and foil their future plans.


He discovers about Operation Blue Thunder, formulated by terrorists from developed countries to cripple India’s growth. The operation aims at executing the nerve system of India – scientists, directors of top research institutions, economists, and politicians. Now it is left to the Captain to nab the baddies and save the country.

With a script that provides enough fodder for a typical Vijayakanth movie, Director Madesh has done his best to present

it with credibility. His attempts succeed in the first half and lose steam in the latter. After all, exotic locations and hi-fi visual fundas are not sufficient to sustain interest when the script has nothing new to offer. Nevertheless, Madesh’s source of inspiration (Silence of Lambs, to be precise) is evident in more than a few scenes.

Captain ought to shed a little more flab (a lot actually), it prevents him from performing his famous fast-as-a-supersonic stunt sequences.

Rakhi Rajesh’s stunt proclaims his wild imagination and sadly defies all the published laws of gravity. The stunts also remain another source of inspiration for people to lose interest. Biju Menon, in his double role, excels with his subtle performance.

Srikanth Deva’s ‘Cindrella’ and ‘Koo Kuruvi’ numbers are catchy but the background score is simply eardrum cracking. Tarun Kumar and Dinesh’s dance movements are also worth noticing. Venkatesh’s camera endows the movie with a stylish look, especially in the scenes when the movie travels to Canada.

Verdict : Not the best bet, but at least not the typical Vijayakanth package

Kollywood Pongal release Movie Review - Bheema

After waiting eagerly for two years anticipating an exciting film from the new pair of Vikram and Lingusamy, Bheema leaves a mixed impact! The trouble with the film is like sending Rahul Dravid a solid middle order batsman to open the innings, something which he is not used to. Similarly Lingusamy the director, with a proven track record for making commercially viable feel good family stories asked to make an action film on gang wars of Chennai!

Sekhar(Vikram) son of an honest police man grew up in small town Rameswaram, admiring the dare-devilry of a local ‘goonda’ Chinna (Prakash Raj), a man who was daring at the same time caring. Right from his childhood Sekhar’s role- model was the kind hearted Chinna who later became a top gangster with human emotions even though he is an extortionist and a killer. Sekhar joins Chinna’s gang, and climbs up the ladder to be his most trusted henchman. Meanwhile a turf war breaks out between Chinna and the dreaded don of the city Periyavar (Reghuvaran) and his sons.

Thanks to brawn and brains of the one-man fighting machine called Sekhar, Chinna and his gang is able to lord over the city which results in a gang war with the Periyavar gang. The new police commissioner (Ashish Vidyarti) declares his own private war against the gangs and forms an elite group of young police officers to exterminate the gangsters through carefully planned encounter killings. Meanwhile Sekhar falls in love with Charu (Trisha), which complicates things further. All this leads to a bloody shoot out in the end resulting in total mayhem, as the rule of the law takes its course.

It is an action thriller, but for a thriller it’s pretty lukewarm as the plot is predictable and doesn’t once take you by surprise. The film has a wafer thin story line that does not get to the emotional core of the characters and that's why we're often unable to empathise with them. However, the saving grace is Vikram’s knock out performance.

The film lacks a solid story with no twists, and instead it tests the patience of the viewers as it turns out to be a mix of fight followed by a song, and again breaking out into another well choreographed action scene that dissolves into yet another song in Switzerland and followed by more stunt scenes!!

At the end of half-a-dozen fights and songs that comes regularly are some sporadic scenes which stands out like a drunken Sekhar confronting the police commissioner at a birthday party in a hotel where he speaks his mind out, the scene where Chinna and Sekhar kidnap Periyavar while he sleeps and when he wakes up finds that he is miles away from his home or the scene where the gang under the guidance of Sekhar in a comic way forces Chinna to marry his childhood sweet-heart Padma (Lakshmi Gopalasamy). These are the small gems in Lingu’s script, which otherwise goes haywire.

Trisha's character is half-baked and lacks soul especially the first scene in which she falls in love with a gangster! Later she follows Sekhar and gets a slap from him! Normally Lingu’s heroines are all strong characters who appeals to the lady audiences for their grit, but here the heroine has nothing much to do. Prakash Raj tries his best to energize his gangster role with some human warmth. Reghuvaran pitches his ‘I-don’t-overact’ act again, while ‘Thalaivasal’ Vijay is impressive as Saamy the conscience keeper and trusted aid of Prakash Raj especially his heart rendering dialogue in the climax.

Verdict: Action thriller

Ultimately, it is Vikram who breathes life into the film. He looks sensational with his toned body, killer looks unarguably delivers yet another outstanding performance of his career. Physically agile, he tempers the recklessness of his character with restraint and pours plenty of heartfelt emotions into the film’s more dramatic moments. See the film only for him.

R.D Rajasekhar’s camera is terrific, especially the action scene in the dark building. Harris Jayaraj’s pleasant tunes are a major plus, but song placements are not correct. In the Mudhal Mazhai song it looks like they forgot to take a choreographer to Switzerland? Another highlight is Kanal Kannan’s well crafted action sequences the market fight in the first half being the pick of the lot.

Lingusamy should have paid more attention to his script instead of trying to extract more heroism from his larger-than-life hero. And the biggest weakness is that his hero always wins and the opposition just does not have a strong enough villain to counter him. It ends up as a one-sided Australia versus Bangladesh cricket match!

Kollywood film Piravom Santhipom - Review

Karu Palaniappan has tried to follow a neo-realistic style within the Tamil film milieu in Piravom Santhipom. He succeeds to a large extent, though at times it looks like a Chettiyar wedding video album in the first half, and drags in the second half.

Karu follows the Sooraj Barajatya format of a feel good family film where all characters are nice, friendly and likeable people. There are no villains, no skin, no disco, no Switzerland or Koothu songs, no fights, no crude comedy and other things that you associate with commercial films.

The director has his heart in the right place and has come out with a clean film which is sure going to be lapped up by the family audiences. Visalakshi (Sneha) whom everybody lovingly calls Sala is the only daughter of her rich parents living in small town Karaikudi. She is a loving and friendly girl who loves the company of her friends.

Her parents arrange her wedding with Natesan (Cheran) an Engineer with the state electricity board, coming from an aristocratic joint family of assorted uncles, aunts and children, apart from her in-laws. Sala, after marriage soon becomes a part of the family and enjoys every moment of it, till her husband is transferred to a distant hill station where she becomes lonely.

Natesan always wanted to move out of his joint family existence and lead a life of his own, and takes a liking for the new place and gets immersed in his work However for Sala it is a bitter experience as boredom and loneliness almost kills her!

The film has been well crafted by Palaniappan, his story line is just an episode in a newly married girl's life but the way he has worked his screenplay around it is what makes the film click. The film is for a matured audience who will appreciate the wonderful economy of expression and deliberate silence at times and the crisp day-to-day life dialogues in the film.

Verdict: Feel Good Family Story.

The melodies of Vidyasagar are soothing and are picturised as a part of the narration, along with lovely camera work of M.S Prabhu who has brought out the emotions of the protagonists in a telling manner. The locations match a large Chettiyar household in the first half and the contrast in the second half where loneliness envelops the frames is beautifully brought out.

As always, Sneha is superb as Sala a woman torn by the dualities of her existence and delivers her career best performance. The way she mixes with her husbands people and takes them along and post interval her dignity in the face of loneliness that creeps into her life is well-etched. Cheran plays a restrained second fiddle to her which helps the film as a whole. Jayaram as the friendly neighbourhood doctor is good. M.S Bhaskar and Kanja Karuppu with their subtle humour are good in the supporting roles along with an army of small careen actors as part of the large family.
