
Popular singer Shankar Mahadevan has been awarded this year’s Swaralaya-Kairali-Jesudas Award. The playback singer, P Dakshinamoothy, has been selected for the contribution to Malayalam film music. The awards that were announced last month, were given away by playback singer K.J. Yesudas in a ceremony organized by the Swaralaya, yesterday.
Mr. Mahadevan and Mr. Dakshinamoorthy were selected from over 2,000 nominations received from various individuals, by a jury headed by Cultural Affairs Minister M.A. Baby, Mr. Dakshinamoorthy, the undisputed patriarch of Carnatic music, receives the honor for his contribution to Malayalam film music spanning over 60 years in which he scored evergreen music for around 300 films.
Mr. Dakshinamoorthy’s award consists of a purse of Rs.75000, a statuette and a citation. The award for Mr. Mahadevan, for creating a unique and innovative style of his own by fusing tradition and modernity, comprises of Rs.1 lakh, a statuette designed by Kanayi Kunhiraman and a citation.
Some of the previous winners of the award include playback singers, S.P. Balasubramanium, Asha Bhosle, K.S. Chitra, Hariharan, Sonu Nigam, Jayachandran, Susheela , music director K Raghavan and A.R. Rahman.
