Kamal Hassan in an interview "Dasavatharam is the costliest film in the Tamil film industry"

Kamal Hassan in an interview to a Mumbai tabloid has said that "Dasavatharam is the costliest film in the Tamil film industry. It has already managed to break even. It is a costly film as its stars; music director and the director are being paid a lot. The best part is that the producer (Oscar Ravichandran) was smiling at the start of the film and he still is smiling when it's complete - which is very rare."

Kamal refused to talk about the story or the 10 different roles he plays in the film. Says Kamal: "The ten different roles are the USP of Dasavatharam The only thing that I can tell is that it is a global film, probably not the first in the country, but truly global. It not only crosses geographical borders but also timelines. It goes back to 12th century and even goes forward without confusing the audiences".
Kamal denied that A.R Rahman walked out of the film. Says Kamal: "He could not give us time, and we could not wait any longer and had to make a choice. So, we looked around and since we also had a Hindi film in mind, we went to Himesh Reshammiya. It was just a business choice and when you see the film, you will know that it works for us. I must say that Himesh did surprise me in the first music sitting itself. But he gave us what we wanted and that too in a very short time. I have no complaints now, whatsoever"

Kollywood talk, Kamalhassan also present in Kuselan with rajini

Yes, it is true! We have heard about actor Prabhu essaying a very vital role in this superstar's film. Now there is one more 'mighty' addition to the star cast and Kamal Haasan too will be seen along with Rajinikanth in this multi-starrer film.

Reports also indicate that Kamal will be seen shaking a leg with the superstar apart from a scene where the two Kollywood supremos would be seen together.

'Ilamai Unjal Adigiradhu' was the last film that saw the coming together of these two super heroes, but that was many years back. Though many producers had requested the heroes to act together in some films, the idea never materialized. Both the heroes have there own style of acting and their fan following, and the distributors are very happy with this news hitting the stands.

'Kuselan' is the remake of the Malayalam chart buster film 'Katha Parayumbol' that starred Mammootty and Srinivasan in the lead roles. The Tamil remake would be a little different from the Malayalam original in the sense of the songs as well as some addition to the scenes.

Now, with the coming together of three stars in Kollywood i.e. Rajinikanth, Kamal as well as Prabhu, 'Kavithalaya' the production house for this film is going to popularize this rare event in a grand way.

When ‘Kuselan’ hits the theatres we can see the coming together of the superstar's as well as Kamal's fans. It would sure be a sight to behold!

Malayalam Movie Mammootty's Roudram Preview and Review

When writer-director Renji Panicker wanted an actor who would fit the lead role in his latest movie ‘Roudram,’ it was actor Mammootty, he says, who came to mind. The shooting of the film is going on in Kochi and will have Mammootty puttin g on the Khaki yet again, as Narendran, an assistant commissioner of police “‘Roudram’ is essentially the transformation of a police officer to ‘roudrabhavam’ or the personification of anger.

Narendran, a law graduate, becomes a cop in the footsteps of his father, who had died in an encounter. He is deputed to investigate a murder that turns out to be a murky affair. He has to take on some powerful names and how he handles it all is narrated in the film,” says the director.
The location is a plush bungalow in Kakkanadu. Sai Kumar, Vijayaraghavan, Sona and Ramu are facing the camera. Cinematographer Sanjeev Sankar goes for a trolley shot to get a full view of the neatly designed bar in a corner of the room.

Sai Kumar, as Sethu, a flamboyant businessman, sternly warns an underling and then turns to an acolyte for her approval. She smiles and gives a thumbs-up sign, which, in fact, denotes danger. The crew goes for some close-up shots.

“I am playing a baddie with a difference. He has some interesting mannerisms,” says Sai Kumar, after completing his shot in the first take.

Manju, who makes her entry into films without any prior experience in the field, plays the wife of the hero. Vijayaraghavan, who was last seen in ‘Ekalavyan,’ is also in the movie.

“My character is called Purushothaman Pillai or Appichayi. He has a paralysed arm and shares a peculiar relation with Sai’s character,” says Vijayaraghavan.

It was two years ago that Renji Panicker made his debut as a director with the hit ‘Bharat Chandran IPS.’

“I get exhausted after completing a film and need some time to rejuvenate,” he says, explaining the reason for the hiatus. He is almost always associated with high voltage action dramas in which the heroes and villains spit fiery dialogues.

“I am doing the kind of films that I feel comfortable with. I prefer to bank on punchy dialogues to create the required effect. There are no songs in the film as I believe there is no space for one in this kind of high suspense drama,” says Renji.

‘Roudram’ is being produced by Shahul Hameed Marikar and Anto Joseph under the banner of Marikar films. Stills are by Ajit V. Sankar. The film will hit theatres towards the end of November.

CSK’s star brand ambassador’s Vijay, Nayanthara and ex-cricketer Krisnamachari Srikanth made the evening memorable.

ICL’s Gurunath Meiyappan with his filmy connections could whip up a breezy three hour entertainment along with dance choreographer John Britto. They had expensive Mumbai based artists like Reema Sen, Sada, Sangeeta and Vasundhra Das, flown in to perform live dances on stage.

In addition there was a laser artist who stole the show with his optical special effects, a foreign juggling acrobatic pair who had the audiences in a bind with their deadly never seen before acrobatics, Kalaripayattu artists from Kerala. Local singer Karthik a big cricket fan belted out some hit numbers.

SuperStar Rajini Speech in Kollywood Fasting and Video Added

Even though the dates for Karnataka Assembly elections have been announced, the state has locked horns with Tamil Nadu over the Hogenakkal water issue. Tamil Nadu saw stray incidents of violence and a black out of Kannada channels on the issue and not just the Central Government, even Tamil cinema’s superstar Rajinikanth is in a tight spot.

A Kannadiga owned hotel in the heart of Chennai had to bear the brunt of lawyers who were protesting against Karnataka on the Hogenakkal issue. The hotel was a mute victim perhaps as a small water dispute is being made into a Kannada versus Tamil battle - a battle which will now black out Kannada TV channels in Tamil Nadu. “They are depriving Tamils in Karnataka of Tamil channels and so why should we let them be seen here. This is our way of showing our protest,” Kayal Elavarasan, President, TN Cable TV Owners Association, says.

Caught in the cross fire between the two southern states is Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. Karnataka Congress sent SM Krishna to meet the PM and Tamil Nadu sent Union Minister TR Balu. “Till an elected government comes and takes certain stand this Hogenakkal Project should not be allowed to go through,” Krishna says.

Even Tamil Nadu’s superstar has a Hogenakkal headache. Born in Karnataka and superstar in Tamil Nadu, Rajinikanth will now have to respond to Tamil cinema’s call for an anti-Karnataka hunger strike on April 4. “Even those artists who are Kannadiga by birth or by language will have to participate in the hunger strike otherwise we will not co operate with them,” Sarath Kumar, President of the Artists Association, says.

In 2002, Rajini became the target of attack after he refused to participate in the Tamil film industry’s rally on the Cauvery issue. He then went on a much-publicised fast asking for a peaceful settlement and interlinking rivers.

Now as the Hogenakkal erupts he and the rest of Tamil Nadu and Karnataka are forced to face the heat as politics on both sides turns a water dispute into a battle for linguistic pride.

Sneha, Trisha and Prabu are in Kuselan Team

Superstar Rajinikanth is now in Hyderabad’s Ramoji Roa Film City and his Kuselan shooting is going full swing in a remote segment of the film city. Kuselan throws up many surprises as the making of the movie is progressing in a rapid speed on a special set.

The latest buzz is that he is going to dance with five leading heroines for a dream song where Nayantara, Trisha were already in the make up room. Apart from these two gorgeous beauties of the South, director Vasu signed with Mamta Mohandas and Sneha also to dance with Rajini in this particular song. Now the director has approached Ileana to shake legs in just 3 scenes of the song. It may be recalled that the same actress had already declined the heroine offer with the Superstar in this project.

Vasu has started the shooting last week for this bilingual project in which Rajini is doing a full length role as hero. The combination scenes with Rajini-Jagapathy Babu-Meena-Nayan and Vadivelu are going on at present. More than a thousand junior artists also participate in these scenes. After this, the mega dream song will be shot in the same location.

Prabhu is going to act in ‘Kuselan’ in a very vital role done by Mukesh in the original movie ‘Katha Parayumbol’ .The music score is done by G.V.PrakashKumar. It has also been indicated that several prominent Tamil actors, most notably Kamal Haasan, Ajith Kumar, Vijay, Vikram, Madhavan, Sneha, Tabu and Namitha have been approached to be a part of a song in the project.

As the place is a remote area like a desert, Vasu instructed to arrange 7 caravans for the convenience of the Superstar and others. But the actor strictly refused all these things and shocked the director by saying that he could manage with ordinary tents like shelter in the daytime and the film city’s moderate hotel rooms in the nights.

After hearing the decision of the Superstar, all other stars and B grade artists including Vadivelu adjusted with the facilities available there.

Amitabh Bachchan feels 'bahurani' Aishwarya Rai

Doting father-in-law Amitabh Bachchan feels 'bahurani' Aishwarya Rai, a celebrity in her own right, fits perfectly in Bollywood's most glamorous household.

Q: What did you think of Aishwarya in Jodhaa-Akbar, and of the film?
A:I have often used the word "ethereal" in some of my interviews earlier, not in this context, but to describe a special moment or a person. For Aishwarya in Jodhaa-Akbar, I'd want to use that again for I lack the knowledge of finding an adequate substitute.

"Belonging to the heavens" or "from the celestial sphere" would sound too mushy and too much like a doting father-in-law. But it would be pretty close to it. The movie was grand, large, symbolic and pertinent. It was full of moments of immense uplifting aesthetic beauty. But the one moment that almost made me stand up and scream my appreciation in the theatre was that brilliant sequence in the qawwali Khwaja, mere Khwaja, when Akbar, hit by an almost other-world connection, gets up and joins the Sufi singers trancelike, moving in servile submission.

This great emperor, this ruler of the land, one with the common man, is succumbing to that unknown force, which no human has ever been able to decipher. Ahh...! I get goose bumps. I have not felt like that since that historic moment in the movie 2001- Space Odessey when the ape-man in prehistoric times discovers a bone and accidentally finds its use as a weapon to destroy another and in the excitement of his discovery flings it in the air. The bone is caught in slow motion as it moves in the atmosphere and... cut to ... a futuristic space station, moving equally, in high speed, to the strains of Johann Strauss's Blue Danube.

Q: Aishwarya has blended beautifully into the Bachchan portrait. What are your thoughts about your "bahu" a year after the wedding?
A: In Uttar Pradesh, the daughter-in-law in the house is addressed as "bahurani". In our house, that is how we address Aishwarya. It is a most endearing expression and completely fulfilling in describing her presence in our home. What other thoughts do you expect me to have after what I have told you. All other niceties remain in the private and personal domain. I do not see any necessity for it to be announced publicly.

Q: A school named after Aishwarya is going to be built in Uttar Pradesh? How would you contribute to this noble endeavour?
A: A promise to the people of the region was made a year ago. We kept our promise and have laid the foundation stone for the school. It will now be built and become operational. I will be involved in funding the construction and will be part of the administration through a trust.

Q: You've always been very family-oriented. May I ask in what ways would you like to honour your mother's memory?
A: These are too personal to be discussed publicly. Our parents are our life, our existence and our strength. They shall remain with us. No matter what we do to honour them, we shall never be able to even go near or match the love and guidance they give us so selflessly and so unstintingly throughout their lives. I think of them and remember them at every step. This is all that they would probably have expected from their progeny, nothing more.

Q: You've decided to sponsor two adandoned girls in Patna. How did you come to know about them? Among all the causes that besiege our society, does the plight of the girl child trouble you in special way?

A: I came to know their plight through the electronic media and volunteered to help. I had helped girls earlier too like treating a young girl, who needed surgical intervention and her parents were too poor to afford the cost. For the two cute little girls from Patna, it was the lost and frightened look on their faces that moved me. We managed to find their mother, who we discovered was a hapless victim of a sad and ugly incident and gave her money to care for the education of the little girls till as long as they wanted to study.

There is a proposal that when the school in Barabanki comes up, we will give the mother a job there. The plight of the girl child is a universal issue and quite predominant in our part of the world. As an ambassador for the United Nations and having worked for the eradication of polio and other diseases in our country, this activity will be an extension of what the UN and the UNICEF are charting out for me.

Q: Finally, the family prepares for the world concert this year. What are your thoughts on the impending world tour and the prospect of dancing with your son and "bahu"?
A: Yes, the tour preparations are on... We go in July-August to Europe and then to US. I have often danced with my son and "bahu". It's being together on a common platform that is more important.

Q: Lately, you've been pretty much doing your own thing, unfazed by the swirling circle of speculation and controversies. Was that a conscious decision?
A: "Deep end"? That sounds disparaging! "Swirling circle of speculation and controversies" are built by the media. I do not see any reason to react to them or allow them to influence my decisions.

Q: How affected were you and your family by the charge that you have done more for Uttar Pradesh than for Mumbai?
A: This is a free country and every man enjoys the liberty of free speech. The law of the land and its Constitution is supreme. Every Indian should be affected by it. Random charges are random. They do not deserve the kind of attention you want me to give to them.

Q: How were your schedules affected by the personal tragedy, the loss of your mom? Did you have to make up for lost time?
A: My schedules were not affected. My producers have all been extremely understanding and accommodating. There has been no loss of time.

Great Sanjay Leela Bhansali return home from paris

The reviews just won't stop gushing. Sanjay Leela Bhansali who's just back in Mumbai after four exhilarating performances of the opera Padmavati in Paris can't believe the experience. "The only opera I had seen before this was Opera House in Mumbai. I had never gone to an opera, never knew there was an operatic influence within me. Now I'm hungry for more."

Now Padmavati goes to Italy in June. After two consecutive performances of the opera Padmavati at the posh Theatre du Chatelet in Paris Sanjay Leela Bhansali is clearly the toast of France.

The reviews in all the major French papers-La Republica, Le Monde, Les Echoes-have hailed Bhansali's operatic overture as an unqualified triumph. Yet a section of his colleagues in Mumbai continue to believe Bhansali's stunning sojourn in Paris to be an extension of his exilic journey that began after Saawariya. A deliberate attempt to play down Bhansali's Parisian triumph is epitomised by a leading young director who told this writer, "I believe the opera opened to a half-empty theatre. Audiences booed the opening."

Far from opening poorly, Padmavati wowed the audience. Such is the response to the opera that it now goes to Italy and other European countries. Exhilarated by the response, Bhansali shrugs off the carpers in Mumbai. "It's rather sad that some people would rather pull down what is an honour for India rather than celebrate our triumph. I was nervous and apprehensive about the first performance. Now after the second performance I'm far more confident. Yes, it works."

Sanjay Bhansali's ultimate destination for Padmavati is Chittorgarh, Rajasthani hamlet where Albert Rousell's opera is set. He dreams of staging the opera live in the real sand with real elephants and camels. At the first performance itself one could hear loud gasps and sighs at the immensity scope and opulence of Bhansali's love tale as it unraveled on stage in unparalleled operatic style.

Wrote Amit Roy in The Telegraph, "The premiere of the Indo-French opera Padmavati had ended to rousing and sustained cheers of 'Bravo Bravo!' from the 2500-strong audience at the Theatre du Chatelet."

The second performance last week went even better, with audiences no hooked to the thunderous tale of Padmavati's undying passion for the commoner Ratan Sen. With the third and fourth performance Paris was hooked."

"It's a triumph for all of us ….Tanushree Shankar who has done the choreography, Omang Kumar who has done the art work and Rajesh Pratap Singh who's done the clothes. And the French team is so brilliant, we couldn't have gone wrong," says Sanjay Bhansali.
